Philip Roth

Portnoy's Complaint

€ 11.95

Philip Roth's bestselling novel, which takes the form of a monologue featuring the confession of a comic character who is thrust through life by his unappeasable sexuality, yet at the same time held back by the iron grip of his unforgettable childhood.

The author:
Born in New Jersey in 1933 of second-generation Jewish American parents Philip Roth is a novelist whose angry and involved explorations of contemporary Jewish life have developed hand in-hand with an increasingly obsessive examination of truth, identity and the nature of the contemporary novel. A novelist who has combined his writing career with various teaching posts in America, Roth achieved notoriety with his very first book, Goodbye, Columbus (1959), a collection of short stories and a novella which examined contemporary Jewish life and won for its author both a National Book Award and the enduring antagonism of significant sections of the Jewish community After two further novels, Roth answered his critics with a book which, as well as winning him a wide literary audience, also generated enormous controversy Roth's response, after a trio of Rabelaisian novels in the early 1970s, was to turn his fictional focus inwards, as he embarked on a series of books-beginning with My Life as a Man and continuing with his celebrated Zuckerman trilogy of-The Ghost Writer, Zuckerman Unbound and The Anatomy Lesson-which examined the sexual and spiritual crises of a successful Jewish novelist. A powerful and elegant writer whose books play with conventional forms of narrative and fictional structure, Roth has remained strikingly prolific throughout his career. Twice winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award-in 1987 for The Counterlife, and in 1992 for his memoir, Patrimony-he won the PEN/ Faulkner Award in 1993 for Operation Shylock and his second National Book Award in 1995 for Sabbath's Theater.
