The ‘Atlas of the Conflict’ is a reflection upon the thorn land of Palestine and it based on the acknowledgment that the physical world, what is built and what it is destroyed, is a translation of top down ideas about society and culture. The understanding that architecture and planning are deeply embedded in their context led us to analyze and deconstruct the different and complex layers of the political, socio-economical and cultural reality of Palestine and Israel. The armed conflict between the two political entities is just the most famous outcome of a broader confrontation which reflects moral absolutes as much as material interest. In the Atlas, this confrontation is shown through the endless changing place of borderlines, the distort use of demographic data, the partisan allocation of resources such as land property and water, the suffocating geography of control, the appropriation of cultural heritage and the schizophrenic abuse of planning and architecture.

The use of space and the act of planning is not neutral and it implies a constant reflection about the past and visions about the future. The analysis of the bold situation on the ground reveals a matrix of control and a physical strangleholds that have transformed the territory in a web of settlements, strips, unrecognized villages, demarcation lines, fences and no man’s lands. Progressively, ‘a geography of fear’ is revealed where Palestinian islands are surrounded by Israeli settlements and roads, separation walls, check points and roads blocks.
