In the early hours of the 27th of May, 1941, the German warship Bismarck - scourge of the Atlantic Ocean - was sailing towards a fateful encounter. Two days previously, Prime Minister Winston Churchill had issued the order to 'Sink the Bismarck'. High winds and low visibility added to the atrocious morning weather as Fleet Air Arm pilot, John Moffat, took to the air in his open cockpit bomber. A warship that had destroyed the famed HMS Hood within minutes, and was able to withstand anything the British military threw at them. Het was een angstig moment toen een terminale poliopatiënt op een brancard naast mij werd gereden en Japanse Shinto-handen mijn keel half dichtknepen onder het uitroepen van gaj-tsjoeoe (ongedierte), gevolgd door een serie dreigementen die bedoeld waren als waarschuwing dat ik niemand mocht vertellen dat ik opnieuw geïnfecteerd werd met het poliovirus van anderen. Een medische handeling die vier keer werd herhaald, waarbij wij door slangetjes en pompjes met elkaar in bloed-dialyse werden gebracht.

Ontdaan door deze behandeling werd ik na de vierde bloeddialyse opgevangen door de Koreaanse kampcommandant, mijn moeder en de kamparts. Rillend van angst vertelde ik wat Japanse artsen met mij uitvoerden en ik vreesde spoedig door hen definitief gekeeld te zullen worden. Dezelfde nacht werden moeder, mijn broer en ik door de kampcommandant naar het Grogol-gesticht gebracht, waar hij aan het Nederlandse kamphoofd opdracht gaf mij administratief onvindbaar te maken.
